A decade of financial education across Europe

The EBF launched European Money Week in 2015. It has since grown into a Europe-wide initiative involving more than 35 countries. Activities are organised by national banking associations and the EBF. The week runs alongside Global Money Week, the annual global awareness campaign coordinated by the OECD International Network on Financial Education (OECD/INFE).

Artificial intelligence, digital finance and changing economic conditions are reshaping how people manage money, and financial literacy has never mattered more. European Money Week is central to the EBF’s mission to promote financial literacy in Europe through events, publications and partnerships.

Key takeaways from recent editions

Recent editions have arrived at a clear message: building a financially resilient future requires action today.

National strategies for financial education

A robust national strategy can contribute to greater economic stability and European competitiveness. Several countries have already taken the lead in preparing and implementing one.

Stronger public-private partnerships

Banks, regulators and educators all have a role in fostering financial well-being. The banking sector has been an active partner in helping Europeans strengthen their financial skills.

Digital security and consumer protection

The growth of online fraud, investment scams and digital security risks calls for stronger cybersecurity awareness and robust consumer protection strategies.

Highlights from past editions

2026 | Smart Money Talks

For many people, especially young people, personal finance feels daunting, stressful and sometimes taboo, so they hesitate to ask questions or share money problems. The 2026 theme, Smart Money Talks, started from a simple idea: confidence grows when people speak up, share their stories and ask questions. It grows further when financial education gives them practical tools, from budgeting to navigating digital finance and recognising scams, that make those conversations easier and safer.

The EBF’s campaign put this idea into practice in two steps: first inviting people into the conversation, then giving them answers they can act on.

Let’s Start the Conversation

The campaign opened with street interviews in public spaces. Passers-by were asked simple questions about their everyday money habits, such as budgeting, saving and preparing for unexpected expenses. These small, everyday actions are where financial confidence is built, and they make money a topic everyone can relate to.

What Experts Say

Experts then turned interest into capability. In short interviews, they dispelled common myths about money and replaced uncertainty with practical guidance for everyday financial decisions.

2024 | Ask Me Anything with Mairead McGuinness

To mark its 10th edition, European Money Week hosted an Ask Me Anything session with Mairead McGuinness, at the time European Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union. During this session, she answered several questions from European teenagers across Europe. We received dozens of questions and selected 10 key questions, to which Commissioner McGuinness provided her insights.

2022 | The Lightning Bolt Quiz

To make financial education more engaging and accessible, the EBF created the Lightning Bolt Quiz. It is an interactive installation that challenges participants on key financial concepts. It was unveiled in front of the ING Marnix building in Brussels and appeared at events throughout the week. The quiz is now a permanent feature at Wikifin Lab, an interactive financial education centre in Brussels.
